Every few months, a financial advisor goes viral for suggesting that young people would own homes if they simply stopped buying coffee. The math has been debunked so thoroughly that debunking it again feels almost cruel.
But the meme persists because it serves a purpose: it turns a structural problem into a personal one. If you can't afford a house, the logic goes, it's because you failed. Not because wages have flatlined while property prices have doubled.
